IMPOSING LOCATION FOR NEWMARKET RESTAURANT

Publish Date: March 06, 2019

Few buildings in Newmarket High Street have such an imposing design as the former Doric Cinema building, almost opposite the Jockey Club headquarters.  Bow fronted and sporting a semi-circle of white columns, it is now being marketed for use as a restaurant.

Jonathan Lager of agents Robinson Layer said: “This is a most impressive building with more than 3,000 sq ft of space.  We are seeking an experienced operator for what could be a super restaurant in this historic town.  We are happy to discuss various incentives to help launch a successful business.”

Behind the building are 36 luxury one and two bed apartments developed by the Murfet Group called The Grosvenor and a major long stay car park.

The original Doric Cinema opened in 1937 and closed in July 1964.  In its time the 1100 seater cinema was at the forefront of cine projection technology.  Since then it has been variously the Cabaret Club, a pub known as The Orange House and a nightclub.  Stars who made live appearances there in the 1980s included David Essex, Showaddywaddy and Gene Pitney.

Jonathan Lager added: “We now have an opportunity to breathe new life into this iconic building.”
